Goal: To Connect

Last week some students and I got together to record an initial hello about goals to a class in California. We are studying psychology of learning and teaching and how that relates to music learning and teaching.

On a practical note, we are interested in how people connect with one another, all the variable factors, and how we can do this across continents. A great way to learn is to actually do the thing for yourself… so …..

Below is a very short audio recording where everyone said a sentence about how they make or deal with goals. Anytime people meet, there is some kind of initial hello, and we thought that having a topic for discussion might just break the ice.

We’d love to connect! Feel free to leave a comment or record a message of your own. Your message might be a statement or it might be a question.

We would love to hear how you approach goals. The audio was specifically aimed at a class of students on California, but anyone is invited to respond, whether you are old, young, musician, plumber, mum, dad, or any walk of life!

  • Did you have any goals for today?
  • Do you write down your goals?
  • Did you set your own goals or are they something imposed on you, that you just have to do for school or work?

The ball is in your court.

  1. Hello, I’m Isaiah. Music is my life; and most of my goals revolve around music. as a musician and a collector of music itself, a goal I have is to be able to hear a song and play it by ear. I am a saxophonist and lately I’ve been working on covering a gorgeous little tune called “This Is My Story” by The Valentines. One goal I have is to study chord structure and keys to discern what key the song is in and how to understand pitch and tuning more clearly. As of now, it’s all trial and error when it comes to me making my music.

  2. Hi! I’m Lesley. When I make a goal, I tend to make a goal that is challenging and will help me grow. Right now, my goal is to learn the violin; this will be challenging because I’m a trumpet player and there are many… MANY… differences between the two instruments. To achieve my goals, I create a long term plan and create short term goals that will later help me with my long term goal. Right now, I plan to practice the violin for an hour a day (balancing school and hobbies is difficult!) and I hope to learn a Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by the end of the week. Achieving little goals like that motivate me to keep working towards my big goal 🙂 To me, the key to achieving anything is motivation and dedication; short term goals and a long term plan help keep me motivated and driven 🙂
